Ludhiana/Edmonton, August 22, 2026: BJP leader and advocate Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal Bhukhri Kalan has strongly condemned the reported attack at Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple in Edmonton, Canada, calling the incident deeply disturbing and unacceptable.

According to reports, an incident took place at the gurdwara during the early hours of Friday, in which two people were injured. Canadian authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the incident, while investigations into the circumstances and possible motive are underway.

‘Attack on Gurdwara is an Attack on the Sanctity of a Place of Worship’

Reacting to the incident, Grewal said that violence inside a gurdwara cannot be accepted under any circumstances. He stressed that places of worship must remain safe spaces where people can pray without fear.

Grewal also welcomed the reported response of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who condemned the incident and stressed that people should be able to visit places of worship without feeling unsafe.

Two People Injured, Suspect Arrested

Canadian police have confirmed that two people were injured during the incident and that a suspect was taken into custody. Authorities are continuing to investigate what led to the incident and whether any hate or bias motive was involved.

Reports have also alleged that the incident involved an attempt to damage or harm Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. These aspects remain subject to the ongoing investigation and should not be treated as conclusively established until confirmed by authorities.

Grewal Calls for Strong Legal Action

Grewal said those responsible should face strict action under Canadian law. He emphasised that an attack at a gurdwara affects not only the individuals involved but also the sense of security and dignity of the wider Sikh community.

He called for a thorough investigation and appropriate legal proceedings so that those found responsible are held accountable.

The incident has once again raised concerns over security at places of worship and the need for authorities to ensure that members of religious communities can practise their faith safely.

Important Note

The allegations surrounding the incident are still being investigated by Canadian authorities. The identity and motive of the suspect, as well as the full circumstances of the incident, should be considered in light of the official investigation and any subsequent court proceedings.
