Students at Punjabi University in Patiala have continued to protest against the fee hike. They are chanting slogans against the university administration, demanding the removal of the increased fees. During the protest, the students closed the university’s main gate, causing difficulty for staff and students coming to campus for other duties. The students accuse the university administration of raising various fees. They say the impact will be greatest on students from ordinary and needy families. Families of students coming from remote areas to study will face additional financial burden due to the fee increase. The leader of the Students Federation, Nirmal Singh and Manpreet Singh of the United Sikh Students Federation said that most students enrolled at the university come from ordinary and needy families. Therefore, increasing fees will add to their hardship. According to the student leaders, they had informed the university administration about the fee hike four days ago, but no action was taken on their demands. Frustrated, the students began the protest. They warned that if the increased fees are not fully withdrawn, a firm front will be set up on the university campus. The student leaders also said that several farmer unions and other organizations are supporting their movement.
